Spartak-Benfica

-The distance between Benfica’s centre-backs is too much. That's why right and left midfielders (Grimaldo and Goncalves) have an advantage when pressing. Because they don't have a big space behind them (1). Spartak's fullbacks were unable to pick up the ball at the start of the attack because Grimaldo and Goncalves pressed them as soon as they got it (2).

-Spartak Moscow avoided running directly into the penalty area (1). Instead, they tried to attack, moving away from the area where the pressure was made with long diagonal running (2).

-Spartak used left wing more. Because Goncalves is a weaker defensive player than Grimaldo and played closer to the midfield in the first half. Larsson, Ayrton and Sobolev came to this region (1). They were in control of the ball, but they were unsuccessful in passing to the player headed for the penalty area (2).

-Seferovic, Pizzi and Rafa Silva have constantly changed places. While all three of them came back to get the ball, they tried to counter attack with passes made to wings (1). The fact that Goncalves and Grimaldo were offensive-backs made it easy for them to come up with this plan. Because there was one player on the wing and the fullbacks played like midfielders because they thought they would not have a hard time defending, but there were no players defending their back like in Benfica (2).

-One of Spartak's defensive problems were sudden narrowing of space towards the penalty area. They moved quickly to defend the penalty area, regardless of whether anyone was coming from wings (1). Thus, side defending could not be made. Benfica player, who was waiting at the sides of the midfield, was effective in every attack. This defensive plan would have been more accurate if Benfica had played in a 4-3-1-2 formation without a winger (1).

-We watched 2 different running types in the first goal. The first is long run after sending the ball to a teammate far away, the second is short run after sending the ball to a nearby teammate (1). Spartak defence was confused on which player to focus correctly. When they got a few steps closer to Joao Mario, who had the ball, they could not defend 2 players’ running and Benfica scored (2).

-It was understood in a few attacks that the second goal would be. Because they always tried to do same thing. Left-back Ayrton went to the side line. There was a gap between the left-back and the centre-back as Moses headed towards Verissimo. Gilberto took the ball as he entered the penalty area and scored.

-Spartak was good throughout the match in carrying the ball to the opponent's court. However, they were unsuccessful in attempt to score. There are 2 reasons for this. First, there is no player who can run without the ball. Secondly, 3 centre-backs and 2 defensive midfielders defended the penalty area very well (1). A team that has difficulty entering the penalty area can try their luck by crossing. Despite having a tall forward, they did not try to cross from afar. They could do this (2).
